A Typological Study of Safavid-Era Housing in Nadushan, Yazd Province

Abstract

Nadushan, which is located 105 km from Yazd, has a long history and was once beside the Silk Road at the caravan crossing, but now for distance from the new road thriveing has been reduced. The role of Nadushan as a joint communication between Yazd and Isfahan in the Safavid period was improved and highlighted. This strengthening can also be seen in the development and growth of the village of Nodoshan. The development of towers and fortifications and the increase in the construction of buildings with Residential function can be seen in the Safavid period. Due to the extent and variety of Safavid houses and the lack of a separate research on the types of residential architecture in this city, the issue has been addressed in this article . The research method of this article is based on historical documents as well as field studies. The method of this research is descriptive-analytical. This article seeks to answer the question how Safavid houses in the city of Nodoshan can be classified? In this research, first, the common spaces between the spaces of the Safavid house have been studied and comparatively compared from the formal aspects. Finally, the final analysis based on qualitative and quantitative characteristics between these houses has been done and the final conclusion has been reached. The results show that in the Safavid period, two types of houses were used in 4-soffeh and house with a yard forms. Nadushan 4soffeh houses have been a continuation of the traditional Iranian housing pattern. the largest number of Safavid houses in Nadushan is One-sided houses with three-part divisions constitute And then includes lords houses with five-part divisions.
